Help! - Steerer Tube on New fork 1/2 in. Shorter

My old fork is 9 1/4 in. and the new one is 8 3/4 inch. The original fork had a lot of spacers, so I am hoping I can make it work. My head tube is a 6 in. gary fisher tassahara genesis model. Can I make this work? Recommendations?
