I had a very hard time getting my old fork off the bike. I followed every direction, but it would not budge downward at all. I came to discover that the spacers and headset were seized up against the fork steerer tube because water had been getting in there and had rusted the components together. I tried using oil and letting it penetrate overnight, but it still wouldn't budge even when hit hard with a 3 pound mini-sledge. I wound up cutting the spacers off with a Dremel tool. When I saw how rusted the old spacers and headset were, I realized that no amount of pounding would have freed them. I basically destroyed my old fork by banging on the top of the steerer tube. I had to cut it off below the start nut since I had deformed the shape of the tube.
